Campinas was a big railroad junction of the lines from the former Companhia Paulista, Companhia Mogiana and E.F. Sorocabana. In the mid seventies, the lines, stations and maintenance works of Companhia Mogiana and E.F. Sorocabana were deactivated; a new junction of those three railroads was built at Boa Vista, a small town north of Campinas, where the Brazilian General Electric locomotive works was located. The São Paulo state and Campinas city government decided to build a light rail system using the former lines of Companhia Mogiana and E.F. Sorocabana that crossed the city's downtown. The system was only partially built and prematurely inaugurated. Due to the lack of appropriate facilities, its operation was a complete failure, leading to service shutdown after some months of service, as only a small fraction of the previously forecast number of passengers was effectively reached. Now all buildings and rail equipments of this system are abandoned. Once again Brazilian railroads bit the dust! You can get more details about this history in the VLT Campinas site.
